Traumatic stress, especially when experienced during childhood, has been shown to be a risk factor for substance use behaviors. "Substance Use & Trauma and Examining the Impact on the African American Community" will explore the concept of trauma, the diagnostic criteria according the DSM-5, and additional research-based symptoms for complex trauma. Additionally, the defintions and prevelance of substance use disorders will be reviewed and the coorelation with traumatic life experiences will be discussed. An exploration into the specific cultural implications of trauma and substance use disorders within the African American community compared to other ethnicities will be appraised. Lastly, evidenced based treatment tools and modalities for addressing comorbid substance use and trauma will be reviewed.
