OhioMHAS Peer Recovery Supporter Training

Steps to Becoming an OhioMHAS Certified Peer Recovery Supporter

Are you in recovery from a mental health and/or substance use disorder? Do you want to use your experience and recovery to help peers with their recovery journey? If so, you should think about becoming an OhioMHAS Certified Peer Recovery Supporter! Here are the steps to achieving your certification:

1. Complete e-Based Academy Courses

Eleven e-Based Academy courses (16 hours) must be completed as your first step to become a Certified Peer Recovery Supporter. Register for your free e-Based Academy account at www.ebasedacademy.org. If you have questions about how to use the e-Based Academy, email the OhioMHAS IT Helpdesk at MHAhelpdesk@mha.ohio.gov.

2. Register for In-Person 40-Hour Training

The second step to certification is completing the in-person 40-hour training. All OhioMHAS 40-hour in-person trainings have been canceled until further notice. Please check back here for any updates.

You will work with OhioMHAS to complete steps 3 – 6.

3. Complete Exam

Complete your Peer Recovery Supporter Certification Exam online. A code will be sent to your email from OhioMHAS after you complete your 40-hour training.

4. Apply for Certification with OhioMHAS!

Once you’ve reached step 4, you’re almost there! This is when you can apply for your Peer Recovery Supporter Certification for the State of Ohio. You must email the following documents to ohiopeercertification@mha.ohio.gov:

  • Certification application (download here)
  • 11 e-Based academy certificates
  • 40-hour training certificate (get this on the last day of your 40-hour training)
  • Reference for certification form (download here)

5. Complete Background Check

Complete BCI/FBI background check (FBI only if you have lived out of state). OhioMHAS has a list of disqualifying offenses, which can be found on page 3 of the certification application. If you have ANY one or more of the following offenses, you cannot become a Certified Peer Recovery Supporter. Do not complete a background check until you have passed your exam. If you have a conviction less than 3 years old, submit a Non-Disqualifying Offense Waiver to ohiopeercertification@mha.ohio.gov.

6. Receive Your Certification!

You will get your certificate by email no more than 14 business days after OhioMHAS has received your background check.

Congratulations! You did it!
