ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga County Supports MetroHealth’s Project DAWN:

Provides $100,000 Grant to Save Additional Lives

Cuyahoga County, OH – 107 lives have been saved from heroin overdoses through MetroHealth’s Project DAWN (Deaths Avoided with Naloxone).  Naloxone, an opiate blocker, reverses the effects of an opiate overdose, and the ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga County is supporting the program with a $100,000 grant to save even more lives.

House Bill 170 authorizes a physician or an advanced practice registered nurse or physician assistant to prescribe Naloxone to a friend, family member or other person in a position to provide assistance – thus making it easier to have on-hand in case of an emergency. Police and Emergency Personnel are also able to carry and administer Naloxone.

Free Naloxone Kits and training on its use are available on a walk-in basis every Friday through Project DAWN on both the West Side (9:00 a.m. – noon; Cuyahoga County Board of Health) and East Side (1:00 – 5:00 p.m.; Free Clinic of Greater Cleveland) of the County.

Naloxone is easily given to an unconscious patient as a nasal spray. It will not harm someone who is not experiencing an overdose. It has no effect on individuals who overdose on cocaine, methamphetamines, or alcohol.
